Maasai Mara officially entered in the World Book of Records

The Maasai Mara National Reserve has been officially included in the World Book of Records for being home to the largest “World’s Greatest Annual Terrestrial Wildlife Migration.”

The Great Migration in the Maasai Mara, is a spectacle of over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles, which happens all year-round, involving a circular journey through the Serengeti and Masai Mara ecosystems.

The most dramatic part, the river crossings, usually occurs between July and October as the herds move from Tanzania’s Serengeti into Kenya’s Maasai Mara.

In a letter addressed to the Narok Governor, Patrick Ole Ntutu, from the World Book of Records President, Santosh Shukla, recognised Maasai Mara as home to the most dramatic annual land animal migration on Earth, adding that the record recognises its contribution to wildlife conservation.

“We are delighted to inform you that the Maasai Mara National Reserve has been officially included in World Book of Records under the distinguished title: “World’s Greatest Annual Terrestrial Wildlits Migration For hosting the largest and most dramatic annual land animal migration on Earth, involving over 1.5 million wildebeests, zebras, and antelopes traversing the Sarengeti-Mara ecosystem,” he said.

“This remarkable recognition honors the ecological significance of the Maasai Mara and highlights Kenya’s exceptional contribution to wildlife conservation, global biodiversity, and sustainable sco-tourism.”

Tourism Cabinet Secretary, Rebecca Miano, commended Narok County Government and the local communities for preserving Maasai Mara and making it one of the planet’s most vital wildlife corridors.

“I also commend the Narok County Government and the local communities whose dedication and stewardship have been instrumental in preserving the integrity of this globally treasured landscape. Your efforts have ensured that the Maasai Mara remains one of the planet’s most vital wildlife corridors,” she said in a statement.

She also extended her gratitude to tourists and wildlife enthusiasts, welcoming partners to invest in the reserve.

“To our cherished tourists and wildlife enthusiasts from around the world: thank you for making the Maasai Mara your destination of choice. Your love for this iconic reserve continues to inspire us to protect and promote its unparalleled beauty.”

“As a Ministry, we remain steadfast in our mission to collaborate with partners to promote, protect, and invest in our natural heritage.

This is not just a win for Kenya—it is a win for the planet. Karibu Kenya, Karibu Maasai Mara!” she concluded.
