Madaraka Day is a national holiday in Kenya and is celebrated every year on June 1.
The national event is usually presided over by the President of Kenya and in this case, President William Ruto will be leading Kenyans in the celebrations in Homa Bay County.
It commemorates the day in 1963 that Kenya attained internal self-rule after being a British colony since 1920.
The national holiday is so important in the history of the country, since it reminds Kenyans about the struggle for independence.
After the introduction of devolution, the holiday is celebrated in different counties every year.
Madaraka is a Swahili word for self governance.
This year’s Madaraka Day is being held at Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County.
