Major roads closed as citizens walk to Nairobi’s CBD

Nairobi residents were forced to walk to the Central Business District (CBD) on Wednesday June 25, 2025 in the morning as major roads were closed due to the planned protests.

For instance, matatus were not allowed to enter the city centre, as anti-riot police officers barricaded the roads to control protesters.

Thika road had been blocked at Pangani by police officers, who urged drivers to use a different route.

Meanwhile, State House and Parliament roads were barricaded with mesh wire to keep off demonstrators. In addition, the Supreme Court and other key Government buildings were heavily guarded by anti-riot police officers.

Sources revealed that no matatus were allowed to go beyond Roysambu as Gen Z walked a long distance to reach the CBD, where the protests are being held.

Despite the heavy police presence and multiple roadblocks set up around junctions and in the city, the youth appeared determined and peaceful, engaging in solidarity songs as they marched.

Wednesday’s demonstration marks the first anniversary of the Gen Z who died during last year’s protest.

Social media posts by protesters highlighted their commitment to peaceful demonstrations, emphasizing that the protest is about demanding justice for victims of police brutality and ensuring reforms in the police service.

The atmosphere is charged and intense, but hopeful, with many young Kenyans expressing a voice to bring about change.

The police have been urged to allow peaceful passage and respect the constitutional right to protest.
