Major shake-up in the National Police Service as Bungei takes over Small Arms Directorate

The National Police Service has undergone a fresh round of leadership changes after Inspector General Douglas Kanja announced new postings affecting several senior commanders across the country.

In the latest reorganization, Police Headquarters Director of Operations Adamson Bungei has been redeployed to head the Kenya National Focal Point on Small Arms and Light Weapons, taking over from Jacinta Muthoni, who has retired after years of service.

The reshuffle also sees major regional movements

Central Regional Police Commander Samuel Ndanyi has been transferred to the Rift Valley region, while Jasper Ombati, who has been leading operations in the Rift Valley, now takes charge of the Central region in an exchange of roles.

In Isiolo, County Commander Paul Wambugu has been reassigned to the National Police Leadership Academy in Ngong, with Isaac Sang, previously in charge of Sports at Vigilance House, taking over the county command.

Further changes saw Donatha Kiplagat, the Deputy Director of Training, deployed to the Police Training College in Kiganjo as the new deputy commandant.

At the same time, Tom Okoth, formerly Deputy Commandant of Traffic, moves to Vigilance House to head the Sports Department.

The reshuffle comes just days after President William Ruto unveiled the Jukwaa La Usalama report and presented the National Security Report to Parliament—documents that outline his administration’s security reform agenda.

Earlier in the week, President Ruto directed that all police constables aged 50 and above be promoted adding that officers should not be transferred again within a year of a previous posting unless their social circumstances are fully considered.

The President also stated that No officer should serve in an operational area for more than three years adding that officers aged 50 and above should be deployed closer to their home counties.

Meanwhile, former Police Spokesperson Charles Owino has officially returned to the service and has been seconded to the Office of the National Government Spokesperson.
