Makini Schools has officially opened a new multi-purpose sports complex and introduced the Makini Sports Festival, marking a significant step in its strategy to integrate holistic development into its educational model.
The KSh 100 million investment underscores the school’s long-standing commitment to nurturing talent beyond academics and strengthens its growing reputation in sports and co-curricular excellence.
The new facility boasts a professional-grade astroturf field for football and hockey, dedicated courts for basketball and netball, and modern changing rooms.
This facility will host both internal and inter-school competitions and represents the first phase of planned sports infrastructure upgrades across all Makini campuses under the ADvTECH Group.
Speaking at the launch, Makini Schools Managing Director Horace Mpanza emphasized the institution’s belief in sports as a powerful tool for developing well-rounded individuals. “We believe that excellence is not confined to the classroom. Sport plays a critical role in nurturing values such as resilience, teamwork, and leadership,” said Mpanza. “This new facility reflects our long-term vision to provide aspirational spaces where our learners can thrive physically, intellectually, and socially.”
To commemorate the facility’s opening, Makini Schools also launched the Makini Sports Festival, an inclusive inter-school event intended to become an annual tradition.
The festival offers a platform for young athletes to showcase their abilities, foster healthy competition, and build camaraderie.
The inaugural event includes competitions in athletics, football, basketball, netball, and team-building activities, bringing together students from Makini and invited schools.
This inclusive approach promotes collaboration and cross-learning, further establishing Makini – already nationally recognized for its achievements in chess and swimming – as a burgeoning hub for inter-school sporting excellence.
Looking ahead, Makini plans to expand the festival to include more participating schools, additional sporting categories, and greater community engagement.
The school will pursue strategic partnerships with sponsors and national sports bodies to elevate the scale and professionalism of the event, aiming to establish it as a key fixture in Kenya’s school sports calendar.
The event also featured the unveiling of a commemorative sculpture honoring Makini’s founders, Dr. Pius Okelo and Dr. Mary Okelo.
This symbolic act reinforced the school’s deep respect for its foundational values and its unwavering commitment to upholding and advancing the legacy of excellence, integrity, and learner-centered growth established by the two visionaries
