Malala set free after uproar over Butere Girls ‘Echoes of War’ play

Former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala, who is also the scriptwriter of “Echoes Of War” play, has been released after spending a night in custody.

Malala was released on Thursday April 10, 2025 from Eldama Ravine Police Station where he was held following his arrest in connection with the controversial play by Butere Girls High School ‘Echoes of War.’

Cleophas release was confirmed by the DAP- Party leader Eugene Wamalwa who tweeted that he had personally secured his release.

“Just secured the release of our brother from Eldama Ravine Police station in Baringo County, where he was held in custody from last night after being arrested and transferred from Nakuru Central Police station as the playwright of the Echoes of War play” Eugene stated.

Wamalwa emphasized that though Malala had been released following his unjust arrest, the girls from Butere Girls will not tire until their hard work pays off.

“Though Malala has been released from Eldama Ravine Police station without any charges after being held and harassed overnight by Police, the girls from Butere are not free until they realize the fruits of their labour. Their heads are bloodied but unbowed” Eugene stated.

Following Malala’s arrest and heightened security interference, Butere Girls staged a powerful silent protest on Thursday by singing the national anthem and exiting the stage without performing.

His detention sparked national outrage, with leaders and Kenyans online condemning the state for what they called an attack on creative freedom.
