Man City beat Newcastle 2–0 to take control of Carabao Cup semi-final

Manchester City took a significant step towards another Wembley outing after claiming a 2–0 away win over holders Newcastle United in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at St James’ Park.

New signing Antoine Semenyo continued his impressive start to life in City colours, breaking the deadlock with a composed finish at the back post.

The forward, who joined from Bournemouth last week, reacted quickest to turn home after Bernardo Silva flicked on Jeremy Doku’s teasing cross.

The hosts started brightly and came close to taking an early lead, twice striking the woodwork in a dramatic spell.

Goalkeeper James Trafford was first forced into action, tipping Yoane Wissa’s looping header onto the crossbar, before Bruno Guimarães smashed a powerful effort against the frame moments later.

Wissa then squandered a clear opportunity from close range, blazing over when well placed.

Those missed chances proved costly as City gradually asserted control, showing their trademark composure and patience in possession.

Newcastle struggled to sustain their early momentum, allowing Pep Guardiola’s side to dictate the tempo.

City put the tie firmly in their favour deep into stoppage time when substitute Rayan Cherki doubled the advantage, finishing coolly to cap a disciplined and clinical performance.

The result gives the eight-time Carabao Cup winners a commanding cushion ahead of the return leg at the Etihad Stadium on February 4, with City now firmly in the driving seat to book another appearance at Wembley.
