A Nairobi man has been sentenced to two months in prison or pay a fine of Ksh30,000 after he failed to pay a hotel bill amounting to Ksh22,760, which he allegedly incurred during a night of heavy partying.
The accused, Qurine Omondi Muteshi, appeared before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina at the Milimani Law Courts, where he was charged with obtaining credit by false pretenses on October 3, 2025, at Vibanda Village in Upper Hill, Nairobi County.
According to the prosecution, Omondi walked into a restaurant, ordered food, alcoholic drinks, and water for himself and a group of friends, but left without settling the bill. The total amount accrued during the night came to Ksh22,760.
In his mitigation, Omondi admitted to the offense, explaining that he lost control during what was meant to be a casual celebration.
“I had some money, so I called my friends to celebrate. During the celebration, I became so high and was surrounded by many ladies, each asking for drinks. Eventually, people disappeared, and I was left alone with the bill,” he told the court.
He further claimed that he later discovered suspicious money deductions and he doesn’t know how he incurred the debt.
Omondi pleaded for leniency, stating that he was not well-versed with life in the city despite having lived in Nairobi for four years.
“This is my fourth year in Nairobi, but I am still not conversant with all the corners,” he said.
He also informed the court that he had previously worked at Liverpool VCT, but lost his job last year due to funding cuts.
“The court can punish me, but please allow me to pay the bill. Some of us are just suffering because we are new in Nairobi,” he pleaded.
Chief Magistrate Onyina sentenced him to two months in jail or a fine of Ksh30,000.
