A 55-year-old man has been convicted and sentenced to 20 years imprisonment after pleading guilty to defilement charges in a Kitui court. The convict confessed to repeatedly defiling his daughter, to the extent of impregnating her.
Appearing before Senior Resident Magistrate Hon. E. Karani, the convict confessed to repeatedly defiling his daughter over a four-year period between 2020 and 2024, resulting in her pregnancy.
The man also faces a separate murder charge in connection with the killing of the survivor’s grandfather. Following the alleged murder, he went into hiding before authorities tracked him down and brought him before the court.
Despite being given multiple warnings about the gravity of his plea and its consequences, the accused maintained his guilty plea throughout the proceedings.
The court heard the facts of the case and examined the exhibits presented by the prosecution. The convict confirmed that the facts read out in court were accurate.
In his mitigation statement, the man made a brief appeal to the court and the prosecution, asking them to take into consideration that he had not caused any delay or wasted the court’s time by pleading guilty.
Given that the convict is also facing murder charges, the court ordered a mental assessment to determine his fitness to plead. The evaluation confirmed that he was mentally competent to enter a plea and stand trial.
The case was prosecuted by Principal Prosecution Counsel Ms. Florence Njihia.
