Police are investigating a puzzling security breach after a convicted inmate, identified as Alex Kibisu, vanished from the Kibera law courts on Wednesday, July 23, around mid-day.
Kibisu, who is currently serving a 20-year sentence, was in court facing allegations of shooting and injuring one, Duncan Shiemi, during a robbery in violence at Akiba Estate in Lang’ata on 30 November 2023.
The inmate who was to appear in court on the disappearance day for another robbery in violence case is believed to have escaped through the rear wall behind the court cell, which is normally monitored and secured.
The incident has raised serious questions about security protocols at Kibera law courts, with concerns rising over how Kibisu managed to bypass four separate security checkpoints guarded by armed personnel.
The Kenya Prison Service (KPS) has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. Kibisu’s sentences were to run concurrently, from December 11, 2023, but the disappearance has now put the courts in limbo, with authorities questioning how the man managed to escape handcuffed.
Meanwhile, questioning of prison police officers who escorted him to court is still underway. There are also ongoing inquiries into the measures being implemented to prevent future breaches.
As of now, Kibisu remains at large, and no official comment has been made by the Prisons Administration.
