Newly promoted FKF Premier League side Mara Sugar have advanced to the FKF Cup semi-finals for the first time in their history after a dramatic 9-8 victory on penalties against defending champions Police FC.
The quarter-final clash, held at Dandora Stadium on Sunday afternoon, ended 1-1 after regulation time.
Mara Sugar dominated early proceedings, taking the lead in the 11th minute through Dennis Cheruiyot. Police FC fought back and equalized in the 30th minute with a goal from Brian Okoth. The second half saw both teams adopt a cautious approach, resulting in a stalemate that led to the high-pressure penalty shootout.
During the shootout, both sides converted three penalties and missed two each before Police’s Clinton Kinanga missed the crucial ninth spot-kick, handing Mara Sugar a historic win.
This defeat ends Police FC’s hopes of securing a second title this season, while Mara Sugar now have the opportunity to dream big about earning their first continental ticket.
Mara Sugar will face fellow newly promoted side Nairobi United in the semi-finals, setting up an intriguing clash between two rising teams. The winner of the FKF Cup will represent Kenya in the CAF Confederation Cup next season, adding extra significance to the upcoming fixtures.
