Former Chief Justice David Maraga has called for the arrest and prosecution of Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat over the death of Influencer Albert Ojwang.
In a statement on Monday June 16, 2025, Maraga noted that Lagat’s stepping aside was not enough.
“The “stepping aside” of Eliud Lagat is a first step. Next we demand resignation, arrest and prosecution,” said Maraga.
Maraga’s remarks emerged shortly after Lagat announced that he had stepped aside to allow investigations into the Albert Ojwang case.
The former Chief Justice further noted that it is now evident that the Director of Criminal Investigations, the Inspector General of the National Police Service, and the Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat among other leaders, blatantly lied under oath on the brutal murder of Albert Omondi Ojwang.
Meanwhile, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has also called for the arrest of DIG Eliud Lagat.
Speaking during a rally in Kirinyaga on Sunday June 15, 2025, Gachagua said Lagat should be investigated, arrested, and prosecuted over the sudden death of a young Kenyan blogger in police custody.
The former DP, accompanied by People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, urged the international community to take action against President William Ruto’s administration for abduction and extrajudicial killings.
Gachagua said many youths have been tortured to death by a special squad, alleging that it is under President William Ruto’s Administration.
He linked the squad to the untimely death of Albert Ojwang, alleging that many Kenyans have lost their lives in the hands of the squad.
“This issue of Albert Ojwang is just a tip of the iceberg,” he continued, “hundreds of young people have been tortured to death by a special squad, 101 officers that was set up by the instructions of Ruto.”
Karua, on the other hand, urged Kenyans to unite to liberate citizens from oppression and bad governance.
She claimed that the opposition leaders were united and asked Kenyans to do the same.
“We have unity of purpose as opposition, and Kenyans should rally behind,” said Karua.
Elsewhere, in Karen, Nairobi County, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and his DAP-K counterpart Eugene Wamalwa called for the National Police Service to take full responsibility for the killing of Albert Ojwang.
“Lagat should be arrested and persecuted because some us are senior lawyers and we know, we can see it,” Kalonzo said.
