Harambee Stars players and a crucial technical staff member were celebrated as national heroes during this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations, led by President William Ruto on Monday, October 20, 2025. The prestigious national event was held at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County.
The honour was bestowed in recognition of their exceptional performance that saw the national team reach the quarter-finals of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in August 2024 on home soil a historic maiden appearance for Kenya at the tournament.
The five celebrated individuals were: defender Abud Omar (Captain), goalkeeper Byrne Omondi, midfielder Alpha Onyango, striker Ryan Ogam, and team manager/data analyst Nick Kimanthi.
They were feted for their outstanding contribution to Kenya’s historic success at the African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Addressing the nation, President Ruto highly commended the team for their discipline and patriotism, emphasizing that their achievement at CHAN 2024 has successfully “rekindled national pride and restored belief in the future of Kenyan football.”
Each hero’s contribution was specifically highlighted. Captain Abud Omar was praised for his outstanding leadership and composure.
Byrne Omondi’s match-saving heroics, particularly during the decisive victory against Morocco, were underscored as instrumental.
Alpha Onyango was recognized as the team’s creative engine, and Ryan Ogam was celebrated for his clinical finishing, which delivered the crucial match-winning goals needed for progression.
The technical insight of Nick Kimanthi was also celebrated for its vital role in tactical preparation.
This prestigious national recognition arrives as the Harambee Stars continue their preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.
