Matatu driver who fled police says he was suffering from diarrhoea, fined Ksh 70,000

A nganya matatu driver whose dramatic escape from a traffic police officer went viral has told a Nairobi court that he ran away because he was suffering from acute diarrhoea.

Donald Owuor Ndeda appeared before the Milimani Magistrates Court, where he faced six traffic-related charges stemming from the November 19, 2025 incident along Valley Road.

According to the charge sheet, Ndeda—who was driving an Isuzu minibus, registration KDQ 547R—was accused of reckless driving after allegedly speeding and endangering other road users. He was also charged with causing obstruction by picking up passengers at an unauthorized spot.

The court further heard that the driver was not wearing the required public service vehicle (PSV) uniform, contrary to Section 103A of the Traffic Act. Additionally, prosecutors said Ndeda ignored verbal commands from a traffic police officer and failed to stop when ordered.

Ndeda also faced a separate count for failing to attend court on November 21, 2025, for a scheduled plea-taking in the same case.

He defended himself by stating that his flight from police was due to a sudden bout of diarrhoea.

After considering the charges, the court imposed a total fine of Ksh 70,000.
