Matiang’i leads Gusii leaders in emotional tribute at Raila’s gravesite

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang’i, today led a high-level delegation of leaders from the Gusii region to the Bondo home of the Odinga family, becoming the latest in a string of prominent figures to pay respects at the gravesite of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.

The visit, which comes just a day after a saddening tribute from a group of Arsenal fans, underscores the continuing national outpouring of grief and reflection for the leader popularly known as ‘Baba’.

Matiang’i, accompanied by leaders from Kisii and Nyamira counties, was received by Raila’s widow, Mama Ida Odinga. The delegation laid wreaths at the gravesite in a solemn ceremony dedicated to the memory of the former Prime Minister.

In a heartfelt statement, Dr. Matiang’i eulogized Raila Odinga as a “hero, an icon and a leader whose resilience, selflessness and courage continue to inspire us.” He emphasized that the legacy of the ODM leader challenges Kenyans to “reflect on our contribution towards making this great nation better.”

“We reflected on Baba’s selfless struggle for a better country,” Matiang’i stated, recounting the private meeting with the family.

In a deeply personal gesture, the former CS presented Mama Ida with a portrait capturing a cherished moment he shared with the late leader. He described the gift as a “testament of the warmth, accommodative and unifying spirit that defined his philosophy of leadership.”

The visit by Matiang’i and the Gusii leaders is seen as a significant show of political solidarity and personal respect, highlighting Raila Odinga’s cross-ethnic appeal and his role as a unifying national figure.

Their pilgrimage to Bondo follows a similar pattern of visits from dignitaries, politicians, and ordinary citizens that has continued unabated since the state burial last week. Yesterday, the compound saw a unique and colourful tribute from members of the Arsenal Football Club fan base, a team Raila famously supported, who came to honour their fellow ‘Gooner’ in a celebration of his personal passions alongside his political life.
