McCarthy’s Harambee Stars ready for Madagascar test

Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has exuded confidence as his side prepares to take on Madagascar in a historic quarter-final clash at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Friday at 5 PM EAT.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference, McCarthy declared that the team’s tough group stage journey has prepared them for any opponent.

Kenya navigated a challenging group that included DR Congo, Angola, Morocco, and Zambia to secure their place in the knockout stage.

“After the test we faced at the group stage, I think there is no team that we are afraid of anymore,” McCarthy stated, adding that the team has proven its ability to overcome hurdles despite slim odds.

The South African coach noted that his preparations for the match extend beyond tactics, with a strong focus on the players’ mental resilience.

“I work on building match temperament within my players,” he said, emphasizing that past achievements are forgotten and the team must be fully prepared for the next challenge.

McCarthy confirmed that the squad has no major injury concerns, with the only absentee being Chrispine Erambo, who is suspended after receiving a red card in the 1-0 win over Morocco.

Striker Edward Ondimo, who had a blister injury, has returned to full training and is available for selection.

While acknowledging goalkeeper Byrne Omondi’s impressive performances, McCarthy also highlighted the need for the team to improve its attacking output.

“We are not scoring enough goals upfront,” he pointed out, stressing that scoring more is crucial for advancing in the tournament.

Assistant captain Sakari echoed the coach’s sentiments, praising the fans for their support, whom he called the “12th man”.

However, he emphasized that the team remains focused on the task at hand and is not distracted by any external factors.

The Harambee Stars will be looking to make history as they aim for a spot in the semi-finals, with the support of a nation eagerly watching their every move.
