As the World Marks World Health Day, one health crisis remains constant, that of mental health.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 1 billion people are living with mental health disorders, with conditions such as anxiety and depression inflicting immense human and economic tolls.
A global survey conducted in 31 countries by IPSOS reveals a deeper problem: mental health is now the leading global health concern especially among the Gen Z population at 45% which is a significant rise from 27% in 2018.
The research states that this has been largely attributed to daily life struggles including high pressure work environments and personal crises.
Mental health is followed by cancer at 38% with 20 million people diagnosed every year in the world.
Stress, obesity, drug abuse and diabetes also feature in the global health concern list at 31%, 26%, 21% and 19% respectively.
Heart disease and alcohol abuse accounted for 16% of health concerns while smoking, Covid 19 and dementia accounted for 12%, 11% and 9% respectively.
Sexually Transmitted Diseases on the other hand accounts for only 3% of health concerns in the world. This is despite the 1million daily cases of curable Sexually Transmitted Infections.
