Mental health takes center stage as a global concern

Mental health is something that the world has been dealing with silently for the longest time.
It was treated like a private struggle, something to hide, manage quietly or pray away.

Today mental health has become one of the most urgent global conversation, sometimes empowering sometimes overwhelming.

But the real question here, is mental health actually getting worse or are we finally paying attention?

Globally an estimated 1 in 8 people live with mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety which are the most common affecting hundreds of millions of people.

Mental health is not just an individual issue, its a reflection of how modern life is structured. It is deeply connected to the world we live in. Economic pressure, social expectations both play a role in how people feel. If the world is overwhelming, people will feel overwhelmed.

In places like kenya, the conversation is still catching up while awareness is increasing, stigma remains a significant barrier.

Many people still associate mental health struggles with weakness or spiritual failure and are told to “Pray about it” or “be strong.” Access to professional care is also limited and mental health is often misunderstood.

However there has been a shift, young people are leading the conversation, normalizing therapy and creating a safe space online through story telling, content creation and open conversations.

Speaking up is no longer seen as a weakness, it is becoming an act of courage.

Perhaps mental health is not suddenly the world’s biggest problem. Perhaps it has always been there-unspoken, unadressed and underestimated.

What’s different now is that people are finally finding the language, platforms and the courage to say: “I’m not okay.”

Maybe the question isn’t why mental health is getting worse but whether we are finally brave enough to admit how much we’ve been carrying all along

And maybe that honesty is the first step towards real healing .
