Michael Karanga wins 2025 Kiambu Open, claims third title at Kiambu Golf Club

Michael Karanga delivered a commanding performance to clinch the 2025 NCBA Kiambu Open title, finishing three-under-par with a total score of 214 (73, 72, 69) over three rounds at the par-72 Kiambu Golf Club course.

His final-round 69, the lowest score of the tournament, cemented his lead and secured him the top prize of KES 115,600 from the KES 500,000 prize fund sponsored by NCBA Bank.

Coming into the final day with a two-shot lead, Karanga’s composure and precision were evident as he carded birdies on eight holes while only dropping shots on four.

His victory marked his third Kiambu Open crown, having previously won the inaugural event in 2022 and successfully defended his title in 2024.

With this win, Karanga earned 230 Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) Order of Merit points, moving to second place overall with 723 points, trailing leader John Lejirma by 72 points.

John Lejirma of Royal Nairobi Golf Club finished second with a total score of 220 (+4), posting rounds of 75, 72, and 73.

Despite a strong start in the final round with three consecutive birdies, Lejirma’s challenge was hindered by a double bogey and multiple bogeys, earning him KES 69,400.

Tied for third place at +9 (225) were Hetansh Shah (Sigona Golf Club), Naomi Wafula (Vipingo Ridge), and Joyce Njuguini (Kiambu Golf Club), each receiving KES 36,200.

Shah showed marked improvement after a slow start, while Wafula, the 2023 Kiambu Open champion, delivered a solid defense of her title. Njuguini’s consistent play highlighted her familiarity with the course.

The tournament attracted top amateur talent from Kenya and neighboring countries including Rwanda, Uganda, and Burundi. Julius Mburu, NCBA Kiambu Branch Manager, emphasized NCBA’s commitment to supporting Kenyan sport and fostering regional unity through golf.

The Kiambu Open is part of the KAGC Series, which contributes to World Amateur Golf Ranking points. The series continues from May 23 to 25 with the Ronald Marshall and Toby Gibson Cup at Muthaiga Golf Club, promising more competitive golf in the coming weeks.
