Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has strongly condemned the viral assault of a cab driver by four women in Nairobi, calling for immediate arrests and justice.
The incident, which has sparked widespread outrage online, occurred after the women ordered an Uber, allegedly refused to pay, and proceeded to assault the driver while damaging his vehicle.
In a statement posted on his X account, Sonko said, “Hii imeniuma sana. Why would anyone insult and assault a cab driver who safely took them home after sherehe? This is completely unacceptable and deeply disturbing.
No disagreement whatsoever should ever escalate into violence, abuse, or the destruction of someone’s livelihood.”
The cab driver, seen pleading with the women during the assault, asked, “Why are you damaging my car?” One of the women was heard shouting, “Ingia kwa gari yako uende!” as the situation escalated.
The attackers reportedly broke the car’s side mirrors and caused other damages before fleeing the scene.
Sonko emphasized the broader implications of the act, stating, “As a strong ambassador in the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), I strongly condemn this act.
Violence in any form whether against men or women must never be tolerated. GBV is not selective, and justice must apply equally to all.”
He further urged authorities to take swift action: “I am calling for immediate justice for this driver and urge the relevant authorities to arrest and charge the ladies involved for assault and for damaging his vehicle.
Accountability must be enforced. I stand ready to support him fully in his pursuit of justice. No hustler deserves to be abused for simply doing their job. Justice must prevail.”
The video has since gone viral, drawing condemnation from Kenyans on social media, many of whom expressed shock at the brazen attack.
The incident has reignited conversations about respect for service workers and the need for accountability when violence is perpetrated, regardless of the perpetrator’s gender.
