Mike Sonko mourns the passing of his mother’s sister

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is mourning the loss of his aunt, Sofia, the sister to his late mother Saumu Mukami. In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Sonko expressed deep sorrow over her passing and reflected on the growing emptiness within his extended family.

“My aunty Sofia, sister to my late mum Saumu Mukami, has just been taken by the angels to go and rest in peace,” Sonko wrote. “Walizaliwa 10, but now on my mother’s side nimebakia na only one aunty anaitwa Momo, former KPA staff pale Kisauni Mlalelo, and one uncle anaitwa Keah Hamisi, former KQ staff pale Burnley Majengo.”

Aunt Sofia, who lived in Majengo, Mvita, passed away earlier today. Her burial is scheduled for 1pm at Kikowani Cemetery in accordance with Islamic customs.

Sonko’s message resonated with many Kenyans, as he acknowledged the inevitability of death and the transient nature of life. “I used to joke that we’re all just walking corpses waiting our turn,” he said. “But now I truly believe it.”

The former governor, known for his candid and emotional social media posts, has often opened up about personal loss. His tribute to Aunt Sofia highlights the pain of watching a once-large family dwindle, and serves as a reminder of the shared human experience of grief.

Condolences have poured in from Kenyans across the country, with many praising Sonko for always honoring his family and remembering his roots.
