Mike Sonko vows not to release Baby James amid controversial claims from the child’s uncle

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has broken his silence over the ongoing dispute surrounding his adopted baby boy known as Baby James, dismissing claims circulating online that he unlawfully took custody of the child.

In a public statement issued on Easter Monday, Sonko said he had initially made arrangements to return the child to his relatives in Kisii, but the plan did not materialize after the boy allegedly declined.

“As I calmly prepared him… the child clearly and firmly refused. He chose to remain under my care. I fully stand by his decision,” Sonko stated.

The remarks come amid an escalating online standoff involving the child’s uncle, identified as Samuel Moranga Araka, who has been making claims on social media regarding the child’s custody.

Sonko, however, termed the accusations as false and misleading, warning against what he described as attempts to exploit the situation.

“Any attempt to use this child for clout, blackmail, or intimidation will not be accepted,” he added.

According to Sonko, his involvement with Baby James began during a traumatic period following the death of the child’s father.

He claims the boy witnessed the incident, prompting him to step in out of compassion despite having no prior relationship with the family. Over time, Sonko says he assumed a guardian role, providing care, shelter, and access to education.

While he did not disclose the exact age at which the child came under his care, Sonko emphasized his history of supporting vulnerable children, particularly orphans, as part of his broader community work. He also maintained that he has never mistreated any child under his care.

The former governor further alleged that tensions escalated after disciplinary action was taken against an individual linked to the matter, citing “misconduct and dishonesty,” though he did not provide additional details.

Even as the dispute unfolds, Sonko struck a conciliatory tone toward the child’s extended family, saying they are welcome to visit and monitor his progress. He also offered to facilitate their travel between Kisii and Nairobi.

“My priority is to ensure that this child grows up in a safe, stable environment, with proper care and quality education,” he said, urging the public not to be misled by what he termed as propaganda.

The matter has since drawn widespread attention online, with conflicting narratives continuing to emerge, placing the welfare of the child at the center of a growing public debate.
