Millennials cookout turns Ngong Racecourse into a nostalgic playground for thousands with surprise artists

Nairobi, 14th March — Ngong Racecourse transformed into a vibrant time capsule on Saturday as thousands of millennials gathered for the first Millennials Cookout of the year — an anniversary edition that delivered an unforgettable afternoon of throwbacks, flavour, and electric community energy.

Marking the brand’s one-year anniversary, the event felt less like a typical gathering and more like a reunion of a generation. From the moment guests arrived, the atmosphere was unmistakable: familiar beats from the 90s and early 2000s, laughter spilling across picnic tables, and the unmistakable feeling that everyone had shown up to relive the golden days — together.

The crowd fully embraced the event’s athleisure dress code, turning the grounds into a stylish parade of vintage sneakers, varsity jackets, oversized tees, tracksuits and sporty fits that perfectly matched the laid-back spirit of the day. It wasn’t just a dress code — it became part of the experience, with attendees effortlessly blending nostalgia and modern style while lounging, dancing and reconnecting with friends.

At the heart of the cookout was the Food Village, easily the most magnetic corner of the event. A thoughtfully curated lineup of Kenyan food vendors served up soulful comfort dishes that kept the grills hot all afternoon. Slow-grilled meats prepared from dawn, classic nyama choma, sizzling mutura and a range of standout plates turned the area into a buzzing hub of flavour and conversation.

Plates were passed around, strangers bonded over bites and the spirit of a true cookout came alive — all while spotlighting Nairobi’s thriving community of local food entrepreneurs and street-food legends.

Music carried the day forward as DJs Rabar, Kronixx, Emvy, Kaneda and BV delivered seamless sets packed with the 90s and 2000s classics that defined a generation. Every drop, every chorus and every throwback anthem pulled the crowd deeper into a wave of collective nostalgia.

Then came the moment no one saw coming.

In a surprise reveal that sent the crowd into immediate excitement, Tanzanian Bongo Flava legend T.I.D. took the stage first, igniting the audience with timeless hits that had thousands singing word for word.

Just when the energy seemed impossible to top, South African soulful house icons Liquid Deep followed, lifting the crowd into a euphoric finale as fans swayed, danced and sang along to the soulful anthems that defined an era.

The back-to-back surprise performances created the defining moment of the anniversary celebration — pure nostalgia, shared memories, and an electrifying connection between artist and audience.

Keyloud from Austria closed the night with a high-energy EDM set that carried the celebration into its final electrifying chapter.

“At Millennials Cookout, it’s always special to see our attendees show up the way they did,” said Dickson Matata, co-founder of Millennials Cookout. “Watching friends share meals together, catch up over plates of food, and simply enjoy each other’s company — that’s exactly why we do this. Moments like these also create real opportunities for the local vendors who make it all happen. The meals coming out of those tents are made by people who’ve built something of their own. When our community eats well, they eat well too. That’s the kind of ecosystem we’re here to build and keep growing.”

As Millennials Cookout steps into its second year, the vision remains clear: continue blending culinary entrepreneurship, premium entertainment, and nostalgic experiences that bring communities together.

With a rapidly growing following of food lovers, music enthusiasts and culture-seekers, the brand is poised to deliver even more unforgettable gatherings that celebrate the past while energizing Nairobi’s creative and entrepreneurial scene.

For those who were there, it was a reminder of why the cookout has become a cultural moment.

For those who missed it — the next one can’t come soon enough.
