The director of Miss Universe Thailand, Nawat Itsaragrisil, has been banned from participating in this year’s Miss Universe competition events. The restriction follows a public confrontation during a livestream on Tuesday, November 4, where he insulted contestants.
During what appeared to be a sashing ceremony, Itsaragrisil called Miss Universe Mexico, Fatima Bosch, a “dumbhead.” He claimed she had followed her country director’s advice not to post promotional materials about Thailand, the host country.
“If you follow the order from your national director, you are a dumbhead,” Itsaragrisil said.
When Bosch stood up to respond, the situation escalated as Itsaragrisil accused her of disrespect.
Following the exchange, Bosch walked out of the room. Other contestants followed her in solidarity. She later addressed the incident in an emotional statement.
“What your director did is not respectful. He called me dumb because he had problems with the organization. And I think that’s not fair because I’m here and I do everything okay. I don’t mess with anyone. I just try to be kind. I’m trying to give my best,” she said.
Bosch stressed the importance of standing up against such treatment.
“I think that the world needs to see this. Because we are empowered women. And this is a platform for our voice. And no one can shut our voice. And no one will do that to me.”
After the confrontation, Itsaragrisil issued an apology.
“If anyone was affected and not comfortable with what happened, I’m so sorry,” he said. However, he has not personally apologized to Bosch, the contestant he publicly insulted.
