Mlami Mwitu officially becomes a Kenyan citizen

Popular content creator, known for his witty videos and local accents, Elliot Berry popularly known as Mlami Mwitu has proudly announced his successful naturalisation as a Kenyan citizen.

After what he described as a “looooong process,” the star finally received his official documents.

The official documents he now holds include: Kenyan National ID, Kenyan Passport, and a Certificate of Nationality.

Mlami Mwitu, whose real name is Elliot Berry , has lived in Kenya for an extended period. His first visit was in January 2009 during his gap year, an initial three-month trip that “suddenly changed” when he fell in love with the place, prompting him to vow to return.

More significantly, he has revealed that he was sent to Kenya at the age of 19 as a “punishment” by his mother for his rebellious teenage years in the UK. That planned short trip unexpectedly turned into a life-changing decision to stay, where he felt “more at home in Kenya within weeks”.

He went viral on platforms like Instagram and TikTok using several names, including ‘Mzungu Mwitu’ and ‘Reverend Dad’:

His videos captured attention through his mastery of Kiswahili, Sheng, and especially his amusing use of the Luhya accent.

His first viral hit was the video Umeunderstandanga’.

The path to citizenship by naturalisation typically requires an individual to be lawfully resident in the country for a continuous period of at least seven years, proving good character and knowledge of the country’s language and duties.

For Mlami Mwitu, the blue passport is a symbol of belonging after years of dedication. He expressed his joy with a witty contrast to those chasing opportunities abroad:

“Now you have been looking for a green card, I have been looking for the blue passport!”

His new nationality grants him all the rights of a Kenyan, allowing him to officially solidify his life and ongoing charity work in Kenya, where he is a certified sociologist and runs an organisation helping boys being raised without fathers in Uasin Gishu.

The content creator, who currently resides in Eldoret, has previously shared that he comes from a “well-known family back in London”. He attributes his initial move to Kenya to his mother sending him there as a disciplinary measure, a move that he now credits for changing his life.
