What began as an exciting academic trip for Moi University students took a different turn when their bus collided head on with a Toyota Noah, injuring 15 students, along the Kisumu-Bondo Road, near the Namba-Kapoyo area.
According to the institution, the bus was carrying 50 students from the School of Arts and Social Sciences, Department of Sociology and Psychology. The bus was involved in a multi-vehicle accident involving the Toyota Noah and a Toyota Fortuner car.
According to initial police reports, the accident occurred when the Toyota Noah being driven from the opposite direction lost control and veered into the lane of the university bus.
“We confirm that 15 students sustained injuries in the accident. Of these, 3 who required specialized care were referred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kisumu, while the remaining 12 with minor injuries received treatment at Kombewa Sub County Hospital,” Moi University said in a statement.
“We are relieved to report that all injured students are in a stable condition and are receiving full medical attention.”
Moi University said it is closely monitoring their recovery and remains in active communication with their families.
Nevertheless, Moi University also revealed that 2 University lecturers who accompanied the students on the trip also sustained minor injuries and received treatment at Kombewa Sub-County Hospital.
Moi University urged that it has activated all necessary support and medical equipment, transport, and counseling services to ensure the affected receive comprehensive care, and also expressed gratitude to the Samaritans who helped during the accident from Siaya and Kisumu County Government.
However, the university also extended its condolences to the family for the tragic loss of the driver of the Toyota Noah and to others affected by this incident.
