A grieving family in Mombasa is demanding answers following the mysterious death one of their own, 23-year-old Faith Anindo.
This comes after what they believe was a botched treatment at Coast General Hospital, Utange Branch.
Faith Anindo, the family says, was pregnant and healthy, aside from a minor skin rash, which led her to visit Coast General Hospital on Monday, May 12.
However, what began as a routine check up ended up as a tragedy, when Faith died allegedly after being injected an unknown drug.
According to the family, Faith’s eyes turned yellow right after the injection, while her body began to swell.
Her husband, Lawrence Wekesa, said the injection triggered a terrifying reaction on her body.
“Hivyo vidonda, dawa ndizo zilimchoma. Ile kuchomeka kwa miguu, ni dawa zilimchoma. Before tutoke, alifanyiwa dressing hapa. Kufungiliwa hio bandage mara ya pili ikawa amechomeka miguu yote miwili,” Wekesa narrated.
What further angered the family was what they described as a lack of transparency from the hospital, with her friend, Benta, alleging they discovered two pages from Faith’s clinic booklet, which contained a summary of the treatment, were missing.
“Hio kitabu yake ya clinic, kuna two pages ilikua na summary. Tulirealize kwamba zimekatwa. Zilikatwa zikaenda wapi? Kama hakuna kitu wanaficha, kwa nini hizo karatasi zilikatwa?” Benta questioned.
Wekesa also questioned the hospital’s decision-making during his wife’s treatment.
“Ingekua kitu inaezekana wangemtibu pale mwanzo mwanzo. N mbona mtu mjamzito anadungwa vipi sindano bila kujua ni sindano gani amedungwa?”
The family’s decision to take Faith out of the hospital drew blame from the Mombasa County Government, with officials arguing that her discharge from the hospital caused her untimely death.
However, her husband, Wekesa, says the hospital was not taking care of her, and hence was forced to take her out.
“Alikua hahudumiwi, angekua anahudumiwa, hatungemtoa. Na angekua anahudumiwa naamini angekua yuko sawa mpaka saa hii tungekua tuko naye.”
Mombasa County Government has since launched investigations in response to the family’s allegations.
