Mombasa lawyer charged with terrorism financing

A Mombasa-based lawyer has been formally charged with terrorism financing offenses by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Andrew Chacha Mwita appeared at Kahawa Law Courts facing two serious charges under the Prevention of Terrorism Act for allegedly collecting and providing resources to support terrorist activities.

According to court documents, Mwita is accused of receiving 12,854 Kenyan shillings through his mobile phone on July 6, 2024, from a Binance cryptocurrency account linked to an Islamic State East Africa cell.

The prosecution further alleges that he received an additional 30,110 shillings from the same source on August 2, 2024. These transactions were allegedly intended to fund terrorist operations, with prosecutors claiming Mwita worked alongside other individuals who were not present in court.

The lawyer denied all charges against him. The court granted him release on a personal bond valued at 5 million shillings, requiring him to present two guarantors as part of his bail conditions. His case will come up for mention on January 20, 2026.

Prosecutors emphasized to the court that the seriousness of terrorism financing cases extends far beyond the monetary amounts involved.

They explained that such offenses represent a significant threat to both Kenya’s national security and the wider international community.

The prosecution referenced guidelines from the Financial Action Task Force, an international watchdog organization, which recommends that authorities handle terrorist financing investigations and prosecutions with the highest level of seriousness while maintaining strict procedural safeguards to protect the integrity of legal proceedings.
