Mombasa municipal stadium revival boosts Kenya’s AFCON 2027 readiness

Kenya’s preparations to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 have received a significant boost following the official revival of the long-stalled Mombasa Municipal Stadium project, now confirmed as one of the key venues for the continental tournament.

The project, which had been dormant for several years due to funding and planning bottlenecks, is now back on track as part of a national strategy to meet CAF standards and ensure the country delivers world-class sporting infrastructure.

Speaking during the announcement, Principal Secretary for Sports Elijah Mwangi said the stadium is a cornerstone in Kenya’s AFCON hosting plan.

“The revival of Mombasa Municipal Stadium is critical to our readiness for AFCON 2027.

“The works will be overseen by the Kenya Defence Forces to ensure high-quality construction and timely completion. This facility will not only host continental matches but also provide a platform for nurturing local talent and boosting sports tourism in the region,” Mwangi said.

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir welcomed the development, describing it as a major milestone for both the Coast region and the country at large.

“This ultramodern 15,000-seater stadium with a canopy will firmly place Mombasa on the AFCON map. Beyond hosting matches, it will serve as a hub for youth talent development and attract visitors, creating economic and sporting opportunities for the city,” Nassir said.

The stadium, which is expected to be completed early next year, will feature world-class playing surfaces, modern seating, and a state-of-the-art canopy.

Officials say the project will also contribute to wider sports development programs, including training facilities for youth athletes and initiatives to expand sports tourism along the Coast.
