Shock and grief has engulfed the community of Nyamgun area in Seme Sub-County, Kisumu County, even as investigations begin over the death of a 12-year-old boy reportedly set ablaze by his mother after he stole KSh150.
The boy was rushed to Kombewa County Referral Hospital by neighbours in critical condition, having sustained 90% burns on his torso, hand and groin area, both front and back. Unfortunately, he died while undergoing treatment.
According to police report seen by TV47 Digital, it was established that the accused, Jacinta Akinyi, a 47-year-old and the mother to the victim, poured kerosene on him and set him ablaze following a scuffle after stealing the KSh150.
“A partially burnt blue t-shirt with white graffiti that had been worn by the victim was recovered at the scene. It was further established that the accused namely Jacinta Akinyi/m/a aged 47 years, who is the mother to the victim, poured kerosene on the victim, who is a habitual petty thief, and set him on fire following a scuffle after the victim stole Ksh. 150 (one hundred and fifty shillings),” read part of the police report.
As the body lies in Kombewa Hospital mortuary awaiting autopsy, the accused person has been arrested and shall be arraigned in court on today (September 24, 2025).
