Mother surrenders to police after strangling 11-year-old son to death inside a lodging

A woman has surrendered to police after reportedly strangling her 11-year-old son to death inside a lodging in Mumbuni area, Makueni County.

The incident occurred on Sunday, March 22, a day after she checked into the facility with her three children.

According to police, the woman left the room briefly to buy toothpaste, prompting the lodge manager to check on the children after she delayed returning.

Upon entering the room, the manager found two of the children, aged six and three, unharmed, while their elder sibling was discovered unconscious on the bed.

Authorities later confirmed the boy, a Grade 4 pupil at Miau Primary School, had died, with visible neck injuries suspected to have resulted from strangulation. The body was moved to a mortuary pending a postmortem examination.

The suspect later presented herself at Machakos Police Station, several kilometres from where she allegedly committed the crime, and is being held ahead of her transfer to Makueni for further processing and possible arraignment.

Police have launched investigations into the incident, with the motive yet to be established. Authorities say the woman will undergo psychiatric evaluation as part of the ongoing probe.
