Mount Kenya University has awarded a scholarship to Truphena Muthoni, the22-year-old environmental activist who captured national attention with her remarkable 72-hour tree-hugging protest that became a powerful symbol of environmental conservation in Kenya.
Expressing her gratitude, Truphena said she was honored by the recognition from Mount Kenya University and the MKU Foundation.
“I am sincerely thankful to Mount Kenya University and the MKU Foundation for the scholarship support,” she wrote on her Facebook page.
Muthoni gained widespread recognition when she embarked on a daring demonstration, hugging a tree continuously for three full days to protest against environmental degradation and deforestation.
Her peaceful yet determined stand drew attention from environmental groups, media outlets, and citizens across the country who were inspired by her dedication to protecting Kenya’s natural resources.
During those 72 hours, Truphena remained steadfast despite physical exhaustion and the elements, sending a clear message about the urgent need for environmental conservation.
The MKU Foundation recognized that Truphena’s activism represented the kind of leadership and passion that deserves encouragement and investment.
For Truphena, the scholarship is more than financial assistance. It represents validation of her environmental efforts and an opportunity to deepen her knowledge and expand her impact through formal education.
“I am truly honoured to have my environmental initiative recognized. This opportunity motivates me to grow through education and create positive impact. Thank you, MKU, for believing in me and investing in my future,” she added.
Having completed her 72-hour feat, Muthoni now holds the official Guinness World Records title for the longest duration hugging a tree.
