Mount Kenya University Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi has mourned the tragic passing of Bishop Josiah Onyancha and his wife, who lost their lives in a road accident in Narok on August 6, 2025.
They were enroute to the graduation of their son, scheduled to take place on August, 8, 2025 at MKU.
In a statement on Thursday August 7, 2025, the MKU VC conveyed his deepest condolences on behalf of Mount Kenya University Board of Directors, the University Council, and the entire Mount Kenya University fraternity.
“We are especially heartbroken knowing that they were enroute to celebrate a major milestone—the graduation of their son, Mr. Edwin Nyarangi, scheduled to take place tomorrow, 8th August, 2025 at Mount Kenya University. What was to be a joyous family occasion has now been overshadowed by this deeply painful loss,” the VC noted in a statement.

According to the VC, Emeritus Professor Onyancha was a distinguished academic, a revered spiritual leader, and a beacon of wisdom and service.
“His contributions to the scholarly and faith communities will be remembered with deep respect and admiration.
“To Edwin, your family, and all those affected by this tragedy, we extend our heartfelt prayers and solidarity. May you find strength in the support of loved ones and comfort in the legacy your parents leave behind,” read part of the statement.
Bishop Onyancha was a notable figure in Kisii politics, having run for the gubernatorial seat as an independent candidate in the 2022 General Election.
While details of his full biography are not widely available in public records, his role as a spiritual leader and a political aspirant highlights his commitment to both his faith and public service.
The sudden loss of both him and his wife has sent shockwaves through the community, who remembered him as a dedicated leader and family man.
