In Muhoroni, Kisumu County Deputy Governor Dr. Mathews Owili paid a courtesy call to Elder Walter Adera Aluoch, chairman of the Muhoroni Luo Council of Elders, following the death of Mama Nelly Atieno, Elder Walter’s spouse.
The visit was both personal and symbolic, demonstrating a leadership style that blends compassion, inclusivity and strategic foresight.
Owili was welcomed at the Tonde homestead by Bishop Dr. Syprian Mwalo Kodieny, vice chairperson of Muhoroni Town Council and accompanied by the subcounty’s ODM leaders.
Earlier, Elder Walter and some elders from the wider Nyando area had publicly supported Owili’s gubernatorial rival, Dr. Joshua Oron. Yet, Owili’s presence in this moment of loss highlighted leadership beyond politics.
In his remarks, Dr. Mwalo Kodieny emphasized the importance of humane leadership.
“Leaders must show compassion even when political differences exist. It is through such gestures that trust is built and communities are united,” she said.
Elder Walter acknowledged Owili’s support.
“From the moment news of my wife’s passing went viral, Dr. Owili has been present,” he said. “In him, I see a big-hearted leader who looks beyond politics.”
Owili also accepted to be the chief guest at the upcoming mega fundraiser to offset funeral expenses after most preferred leaders gave a cold shoulder due the earlier political declaration by a section of elders.
During the visit, hundreds of mourners hailed Owili for showing empathy. Many dismissed earlier political divisions, expressing support for him as a leader who prioritizes people over politics.
One resident remarked, “He did not come to campaign. He came to show that he cares.”
In a calculated, somber and reflective speech, Owili conveyed condolences from Kisumu Governor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o.
“The governor sends his deepest condolences to Elder Walter and the Muhoroni community,” he said. “My close and cordial working relationship with Governor Nyong’o during his first and second term demonstrates that I have the experience and temperament to serve effectively and succeed him when the time comes,” he added as he assured the berieved family of his full support.

Analysts note that Owili’s inclusive leadership and collaborative relationship with the governor set him apart.
In counties like Siaya and Homa Bay, deputies who have openly opposed their governors or failed to coordinate are struggling to win public confidence and mount credible succession bids.
Owili’s demonstrated teamwork with Governor Nyong’o enhances his credibility, showing that he can govern without political conflict undermining service delivery.
“Leadership is about empathy, accessibility and building bridges,” said a resident. “Owili demonstrates all these qualities, which is why he resonates with a broad spectrum of residents.”
“When a deputy works harmoniously with the governor, it signals stability and continuity. Owili’s experience and relationship with Nyong’o build public trust.” Another visitor at Elder’s residence affirmed.
By supporting bereaved families, bridging political divides and committing to practical actions like the fundraiser, he demonstrates a leadership grounded in both ethics and pragmatism.
As Kisumu prepares for upcoming political contests, Owili’s approach combining empathy, inclusivity and strategic engagement positions him as a unifying figure.
His proven collaboration with Governor Nyong’o further reinforces his competence and reliability, earning public confidence for future governance.
In Elder Walter’s words, “He did not come as a politician. He came as a leader who understands that life is bigger than politics. That is the kind of leader we need.”
