MP Makali defends his record as Kanduyi parliamentary race attracts more aspirants

Kanduyi Member of Parliament John Makali has brushed aside his political rivals who have expressed interest in challenging him for the seat in the 2027 general elections, insisting that his development record speaks for itself.

Several aspirants have declared their intention to vie for the Kanduyi parliamentary seat, among them journalist Zaccheus Mwasame and former long-serving MP Wafula Wamunyinyi.

Wamunyinyi, who represented the constituency for 20 years unsuccessfully attempted to reclaim the seat in the 2022 general elections on a Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) ticket but was defeated by Makali.

Speaking at Namwacha Junior School on Wednesday February 4, 2026 during the launch of five newly constructed classrooms funded by the NG-CDF, Makali urged Kanduyi residents to re-elect him in 2027, citing tangible achievements in the education sector.

The Ford Kenya legislator highlighted the construction of modern storey buildings in several schools across the constituency and the purchase of school buses which he said have significantly eased student transport while also serving the wider community during emergencies.

“The buses that we distribute in institutions aren’t meant for students and teachers alone but also to serve the community when need arises,” he stated.

Makali took a swipe at his main challenger, former MP Wafula Wamunyinyi arguing that the veteran politician had ample time to deliver but failed to address critical development gaps.

“Please ignore my colleague and former MP Wafula Wamunyinyi. He was the longest-serving MP in Kanduyi’s history and there is nothing new he can offer that he did not do during his many years in Parliament,” Makali said.

He singled out Namwacha Primary Junior School as one of the institutions that had been neglected for years despite having produced prominent leaders like former MP Alfred Khang’ati.

“One day I attended a funeral here and area MCA Zeddy Mukhwana showed me the poor state of this school. I immediately committed to set aside KSh7.5 million for construction of five modern classrooms, which we are officially launching today,” he added.

However, the MP cautioned residents against the misuse of social media accusing some individuals of spreading misinformation and using online platforms to unfairly attack leaders.

Makali assured locals that key concerns frequently raised online such as poor road infrastructure and electricity connectivity were already being addressed.

“The upgrading of roads in Kanduyi Constituency has already commenced. On electricity, Energy Cabinet Secretary James Opiyo Wandayi recently visited the area and the last-mile connection programme is ongoing,” he affirmed.

Turning to the troubled sugar sector, Makali called on employees and farmers supplying sugarcane to Nzoia Sugar Company to remain patient assuring them that the government was working to clear pending arrears.

Makali expressed confidence in the investor who took over control of Nzoia Sugar from the government stating that other sugar factories that the investor is managing are doing well and farmers are paid on time.

“Last week during the National Assembly retreat in Naivasha, we engaged the Agriculture Cabinet Secretary and the Principal Secretary. They assured us that mechanisms are in place to resolve the outstanding payments,” he said.

The MP reiterated his commitment to continued development, urging residents to ignore political noise and instead focus on service delivery and progress for Kanduyi Constituency.
