National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has instructed all Members of Parliament to submit records of their security details for vetting as a way to enhance their security days after Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were was shot dead in presence of his security detail.
Wetangula who spoke at the late Legislature’s requiem mass at Consolata Shrine Westlands, questioned the circumstances under which the MP died, thus the need to know details of all bodyguards who protect MPs to prevent a similar occurrence.
Wetangula also asked the National Assembly Clerk to submit CCTV footage that captured movements and whereabouts of the late Were around parliament before his demise, as it will reveal more information that can be used in investigations.
“We encourage the police to not only narrow their investigations around the city mortuary but also from around parliament precincts from the time Hon. Were arrived at Parliament to the time he left.” Wetangula advised.
The speaker also challenged Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja to ensure 24 hour surveillance of CCTV cameras across Nairobi city to ensure any persons conducting mischievous activities are captured as a security measure.
Legislatures and family members of the late Charles Were have also called on police and investigating authorities to quickly expedite investigations into the killing Honorable Were, who was shot at close range by a suspected assailant under unclear circumstances.
The leaders also expressed displeasure at the way a section of Kenyans have shown no remorse to the family of the legislature calling for tolerance and respect to the bereaving family.
“Politicians are also human beings and deserve to be treated with humanity as well.” Lamented Homa bay Governor Gladys Wanga.
