Genge rapper Major Nameye Khadija, popularly known as Mejja, has finally let the world into the story behind his newly released album, and at the heart of it all is a mother’s name and a son’s quiet but powerful act of love.
Speaking on Radio 47’s #Base47NaManucho, Mejja revealed that the album title is essentially his own name, only told differently.
He chose to call it Mtoto wa Khadija (child of Khadija), a nod to his mother that he says carries a weight far deeper than words.
“I wanted to pay homage to my mum. Putting my mum on the album is symbolic,” he said.
For an artist whose music has long thrived on dancefloor energy and street anthems, this album represents a different kind of creative space.
Mejja explained that unlike singles, which he approaches with a sharp commercial eye, thinking about radio rotation and club play, the album allowed him to include music rooted in genuine feeling rather than market calculation.
He revealed that he has recorded a wealth of material alongside producer Chrome, but has not hesitated to set aside tracks he could not personally connect with, regardless of how crowd-friendly the beat may be.
For Mejja, if it does not move him, it does not make the cut.
In a lighter moment, he jokingly credited the album’s slower, more mellow tracks to the influence of “watu wa mmea,” quipping that he understands and appreciates their vibe, and that the energy is reflected in the project.
“Unajua watu wa mmea wanapenda slow songs manze. That’s why niliweka hiyo vibe hapo,” he stated.
But behind the laughter, Mejja was candid about the toll the album took on him.
He admitted that the pressure in the weeks leading up to the release was immense, describing the period two weeks before the drop as particularly gruelling.
Now on the other side of it, he says he feels a renewed sense of calm.
“Niko freshi, nashukuru Jah Jah. Saa hii ukiniuliza niko aje nitasema niko poa because the album ilikuwa inanipea pressure. Saa hii at least manze, pressure haijaisha lakini imepungua.” he said.
Mtoto wa Khadija album is now out.
