Murang’a County Government has announced that Governor Irungu Kang’ata suffered a heel tendon injury after tripping during a Nutritional International meeting held on Wednesday 18th February, 2026, in Nairobi.
“H.E. Gov. Irungu Kang’ata was today attending a Nutritional International meeting in Nairobi when he unfortunately tripped and sustained an injury to his heel tendons,” the county government confirmed in an official statement.
The meeting was organized by Nutrition International, a Canadian Government-backed organization that works alongside Murang’a County and other counties across Kenya to advance nutritional and public health initiatives.
The county has noted that the partnership focuses on implementing key nutritional and public health programmes across member counties.
Following a medical evaluation, the Governor has been advised to remain away from in-person office engagements for approximately one month.
The statement noted that he has been advised “to remain away from physical office engagements for approximately one month to allow for full recovery,” during which he will continue to receive treatment.
To ensure the seamless running of county affairs, Deputy Governor Stephen Munania will step in where the Governor’s physical presence is required.
In addition, the County Executive Committee Member for Finance, Prof. Kiarie, will handle designated engagements as appropriate.
Virtual official meetings, however, are set to resume as from coming Monday.
“Murang’a County Government appreciates the continued prayers and goodwill from residents and stakeholders and we wish the Governor a speedy recovery,” ended the statement.
