Murkomen briefed on West Pokot security situation ahead of ‘Jukwaa La Usalama’

Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has been briefed on the state of security in West Pokot County ahead of Thursday, July 17 ‘Jukwaa La Usalama’ town hall engagement, a public safety dialogue aimed at addressing community security concerns and strengthening inter-agency collaboration.

Speaking before the forum, CS Murkomen acknowledged that while West Pokot remains largely peaceful, several persistent security challenges demand immediate attention. These include livestock theft, illicit mining, the presence of illegal immigrants, and ongoing disputes over borders and natural resources.

“While the county is largely calm, livestock theft, illicit mining, illegal immigrants, border and resource disputes are some of the challenges that need urgent addressing.”Murkomen said.

“We shall explore possible interventions to these and other issues during our town hall meeting today,” he added.

The briefing and subsequent discussions were attended by top security officials, including Deputy Inspector General of Police – Administration Police Service (APS) Gilbert Masengeli, Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Dr. Abdi Hassan, Regional Police Commander Jasper Ombati, Regional Administration Police Commander John Amadadi, and West Pokot County Commissioner Khalif Abdullahi.

Murkomen emphasized that the government is committed to inclusive and sustainable solutions, highlighting that the Jukwaa La Usalama forums are designed to give citizens a platform to voice their concerns and contribute to local safety strategies. The town hall engagement is expected to generate action points and policy recommendations that will inform the Ministry of Interior’s regional security planning.

ID issuance

The CS also assessed the flow of National Identification (ID) issuance and other citizen services in the country.

While acknowldging that identification documents facilitate access to crucial services and sources of livelihoods, such as employment, CS Murkomen said that the Kenya Kwanza Government is ramping up ID issuance, especially in marginalised regions, to bring them on par with the rest of the country.

“The Mobile Live Capture Unit, a portable battery-powered machine, which we are currently piloting, will go a long way in speeding up registration in marginalised areas. The machine captures data of ID applicants and transmits it electronically for processing, after which applicants receive their cards in three days.

“We have put in place enough safeguards to ensure only the rightful applicants are registered after we removed the discriminatory extra vetting requirement for border counties. Assessed the flow of ID issuance and other citizen services in West Pokot County,” Murkomen noted.
