In a decisive move to reinforce governance and financial accountability within Kenya’s sports sector, Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, Salim Mvurya, officially inaugurated the Ministry’s Ministerial Audit Committee.
The ceremony, held at the Ministry’s headquarters in Nairobi, was marked by a strong call for transparency and diligence as the Ministry embarks on a new chapter of enhanced oversight.
Chaired by Esther Muriithi Ndegwa, the new Audit Committee stands as a milestone in the Ministry’s ongoing efforts to ensure robust governance and financial stability.
Speaking at the event, CS Mvurya emphasized that the committee’s formation is not merely procedural but a core component of the Ministry’s broader strategy for excellence and integrity.
“The creation of this committee is a significant step in our journey towards greater accountability and trust. We are committed to achieving a Zero-Fault Audit status for the 2024/2025 financial year,” declared Mvurya. He underscored the Ministry’s dedication to meeting the highest standards of financial management, particularly given the scale and complexity of the projects under its purview.
To ensure this vision is realized, CS Mvurya directed all Ministry officers to perform their duties with unwavering diligence, strictly adhering to legal frameworks, ethical standards, and sound financial practices.
The committee’s mandate is expected to cover all aspects of project oversight, budget management, and compliance monitoring.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by the presence of Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi and Senior Finance Officers from the Ministry’s two State Departments. Their attendance signals a unified front in the Ministry’s push for operational excellence and public confidence.
The launch of the Audit Committee comes at a time when the Ministry is overseeing several high-profile initiatives, including the ongoing construction and upgrade of sports infrastructure, talent development programs, and preparations for upcoming international sporting events. With this strengthened oversight mechanism, stakeholders are optimistic that the Ministry will achieve its ambitious targets while safeguarding public resources and maintaining the trust of Kenyan sports enthusiasts.
