Mwingi banana traders decry heavy losses as goods rot under scorching sun

Wholesale banana traders in Mwingi, Kitui County, have raised concerns over mounting losses, blaming the municipal leadership for what they describe as deplorable working conditions.

The traders, who were recently evicted from the designated wholesale market, say they have been forced to sell their bananas in open spaces and private plots. Exposed to the scorching sun, their perishable goods are quickly spoiling, leaving them counting heavy losses.

They further lament that selling on private land is not sustainable, as property owners could eject them at any time, worsening their already precarious situation.

“We are working under harsh and uncertain conditions,” one trader said, urging local authorities to provide a proper and enabling business environment.

In addition to the heat, the traders now fear that the looming rainy season will compound their troubles, further jeopardizing their livelihoods.
