My Guinea in laws bewitched me and killed my husband

Caroline Wanjiru Nduati grew up in a prayerful Christian family based in Huruma. Growing up, it never occured to her she would wind up marrying into a family that would bewitch her.

She bumped into the love of her life who came from Guinea in the streets of Nairobi. Nothing could come between their love story, not even language barrier. The man spoke French, but in no time, he learnt Swahili and English and it was not long before he started communicating both languages fluently. There is certainly nothing love cannot transcend.

They got married a year later in 2007 and immediately after, she conceived their firstborn. She recalls going to give birth with not a single cent to her name. They could not afford diapers.

As luck would have it, one of her wardmates offered her three diapers. One year, nine months later, she conceived their second born and that was the husband’s wake up call.

“He told me he would do anything in his power to ensure his family never lacks,” she told a local YouTube channel in an interview. And that he did.

He found his way around one of the most lucrative sources of income in Kenya: government tenders and this became their breakthrough. Gradually, a couple who could not afford diapers for their young one owned multiple cars and businesses.

Meet the in laws

In 2012, Caroline’s husband was deported back to Guinea as his visa had expired, she took this as an opportunity to accompany him so as to finally meet her in laws.

She left their children with her mother and off she went. Upon reaching Guinea, they stayed in a hotel against her will. Her pleas to visit her husband’s ancestral home fell on deaf ears. It took her father in law’s intervention to finally visit the home.

The state of their living condition left her aghast. They lived in abject poverty but what shocked her the most was the fact that her husband would lie that they were well off.

She recalls her mother in law inviting her to her matrimonial bedroom and immediately she sat on the bed it fell apart. She promised to get her mother in law a new bed and educate two of his sisters in Kenya.

Her husband pleaded with her to stop getting involved with his family with no clear reasons other than, “I know these people.”

Her rebuttal was that she comes from a society where it is an abomination to neglect family. Eventually, they went back to Kenya and his two sister started living with them. They would additionally have guests from Guinea every so often.

Guinea Relocation spell

“My husband had goiter and as he undertook surgery, I walked in on his two sisters and uncle planning on how they would disinherit me if he died. I recall one of them saying, my car is really nice she would take it.”

He survived. One day Caroline had the need to relocate her family to Guinea. Her husband was opposed to it but she stood her ground threatening that she would leave with their children whether he went with them or not. He had no option but to cower. They relocated three days after the decision was made.

While in Guinea one day, her husband got into an argument with his sister. “I had her say, do you think you are the one who brought yourself here? We called you!” She alleged insinuating they used witchcraft.

The rain started beating them

Caroline became expectant with their fourth child and at three months pregnant, the husband broke his leg which took more than six months to heal. Months after their daughter was born, her husband informed her that there would be a sacrifice that would help him become a king as he had political aspirations.

“He told me that the sacrifice would require one person to die and that one of his uncle’s had agreed to die,” she told ‘All Things are Spiritual’, “this shocked me but he assured me that it is something his family did every ten years.”

Gold was one of the requirements for the sacrifice and the only gold available at the time were their gold rings. “I initially refused to give him my ring but upon further persuassion, I eventually cowed,” she said.

The sacrifice happened at the wee hours of the night and immediately after the sacrifice, her husband fell ill. They contacted a medical doctor who conducted a couple of tests but could not find anything.

In the morning, he worsened and he was rushed to hospital. “He kept telling me, they have sold my family, I’d rather die than watch them take my family. If anything happens to me, take my children to Kenya.”

“He had difficulty breathig and immediately he got to hospital, they put him in a oxygen machine. The uncles would not allow me to talk to him but his bestfriend advised me to force my way to his room. When I eventually got in, he urged me not to touch the rings once they are brought back.”

“The uncles asked me to go and process the hospital bill only for me to find them sneaking him out of the hospital using an ambulance. I forced my entry into the ambulance and immediately we left the hospital compund, he took his last breath,” she narrated.

She came to find out that the husband had registered all their property under his family name. They disinherited. She eventually came back to Kenya with her four children with nothing but their clothes in her name.

Upon returning, her children had to take a one year gap year as she could not afford paying their international school fees. She enquired with the Ministry of Education whether she would be able to change them from the British system back to the Kenyan system but they told her it was impossible since they were too far gone.

Caroline continues to rebuild. She is now an enterprenuer slowly picking up the broken pieces.
