Mystery surrounding the disappearance of Raphael Tuju and his driver

The family of former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju now says they strongly suspect he may have been abducted after he went missing under unclear circumstances on Saturday March 21, 2026.

Tuju has not been seen since Saturday afternoon and his phone has been switched off since then thus raising alarm among family members and close associates.

According to his son, Mano Tuju, the family was alerted by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) in Karen informing him that Tuju’s vehicle had been found abandoned along Miotoni Lane in the Karen area. The discovery of the car marked the first sign that something could be wrong.

Prior to his disappearance, Tuju had reportedly expressed concern for his safety. On Friday, he is said to have reported that he was being followed by a white Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series that did not have number plates. This raised suspicion and concern about a possible surveillance.

Tuju had also been expected to appear for a scheduled interview at Ramogi FM on Saturday at 7:00 pm, but he did not show up and could not be reached. Efforts to contact him since then have been unsuccessful.

Adding to the mystery, his driver, Steve Mwangi who was last known to be with him, is also missing.

The sequence of events from the reported trailing vehicle, to the abandoned car, and the sudden loss of contact has deepened fears within the family that his disappearance may involve foul play.

All this comes in the wake of a recent and highly publicised land dispute that saw Tuju evicted from his Karen home, following a long-running legal battle over property ownership and debt.
