Nairobi health workers call off strike after agreement with county gov’t

Health workers in Nairobi have officially called off their strike after reaching an agreement with the Nairobi City County Government following a series of negotiations with their respective unions.

The unions involved in the discussions include the Kenya National Union of Nurses (Nairobi Branch), the Kenya Environmental Health and Public Health Practitioners’ Union (KEHPHPU), and the Kenya Union of Nutritionists and Dieticians (KUNAD).

In a statement issued by the Nairobi City County Department of Health, Wellness and Nutrition, the County Executive Committee Member for Health, Suzanne Silantoi, confirmed that talks between county officials and union representatives concluded successfully, paving the way for health workers to resume duty.

The County Government described the discussions as constructive and productive, noting that both parties reached a mutual understanding aimed at addressing the concerns raised by health workers while safeguarding the delivery of essential health services to Nairobi residents.

Following the agreement, both the County Government and union leadership jointly called on health workers to resume duty within 24 hours to ensure the full restoration of services across public hospitals and health centres in the county.

The return to work is expected to restore normal operations in several county health facilities that had been affected by the industrial action.

The breakthrough comes just days after CECM Suzanne Silantoi briefed the County Assembly Health Committee on the progress made in addressing issues raised by health practitioners. During the session, she emphasized that the County Government had acted in good faith to resolve the concerns and that continued industrial action would be unreasonable while solutions were already being implemented.

According to the county health department, more than eight key issues raised by health workers had already been addressed last week, with the remaining matters currently at advanced stages of resolution.

The County Government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining constructive engagement with health workers and strengthening the health system while ensuring uninterrupted access to healthcare services for the residents of Nairobi.
