Nairobi: Two teachers confirmed dead, 26 injured in accident after Kuppet elections

Two teachers were confirmed dead and 26 others were seriously injured in a tragic road accident along Thika Road, in Nairobi.

The teachers lost their lives after a 33-seater matatu lost control and rammed into them outside City Primary School in Ngara on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

The teachers had gathered at the school to participate in the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) elections.

Eyewitnesses described a horrific scene as the matatu veered off the road and struck the group of teachers who were waiting outside the school.

Kuppet secretary general Akelo Misori issued a statement, offering condolences to the bereaved families and wished a quick recovery for the injured teachers.

“One teacher was confirmed dead on the spot, and another while undergoing treatment. Up to 26 suffered injuries, and all were rushed to various hospitals around the city where they are receiving urgent medical attention including critical care for the seriously injured,” said Misori.

Misori added that 13 teachers were admitted to the Aga Khan Hospital in Parklands for tearment.

“The doctors and nurses are sparing no effort to save the lives of our teachers. Some are in theatre now, undergoing procedures.

“Other teachers are being attended to at Kenyatta National Hospital (5), Nairobi West Hospital (3), Scholastica (2), Radiant (2) and Mater Hospital (1). Our officials and staff are ensuring that the teachers get the attention they need,” he noted in a statement.

He said the entire KUPPET family is heartbroken from the tragic loss of life, wishing quick recovery for the injured teachers and looking forward to seeing them in renewed health.

Videos obtained by TV47 show the school bus overturned on its side with rescue operations underway at the accident scene.

Meanwhile, witness accounts indicate that the accident occurred when the matatu experienced brake failure, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle along the busy highway.

“The motor vehicle lost control as a result of brake failure and crashed into roadside guardrails and overturned,” stated a witness.
