Nairobi United face uphill battle in CAF Confederation Cup finale

Nairobi United head into their final TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup Group B fixture facing the prospect of completing the campaign without a point.

The Kenyan side have endured a difficult debut at this stage of the competition, losing all five matches played so far.

Their latest setback came on Sunday in Nairobi, where they fell 1-0 to Moroccan heavyweights Wydad Athletic Club.

United opened their group campaign with a 3-0 defeat away to Wydad before suffering a 1-0 loss at home to DR Congo’s Maniema Union last November.

At the start of the year, they were beaten 2-1 on home soil by Tanzania’s Azam FC, and then lost 1-0 in Dar es Salaam in the return leg against Azam, a result that confirmed their elimination.

Competing in the tournament for the first time, Nairobi United qualified after lifting the FKF Cup last season while still in the second tier, before also securing promotion to the top flight in the same campaign.

They sit bottom of Group B with zero points, having scored once and conceded eight goals for a goal difference of -7.

United will conclude their campaign away to Maniema Union in Lubumbashi on Sunday, hoping to avoid a sixth straight defeat and close their continental run on a positive note.

Meanwhile, the race for quarter-final places intensifies across the continent, with four of the eight slots still undecided heading into the final round.

The top two teams in each group advance, with standings determined first by head-to-head results.

In Group B, Wydad Casablanca lead on 12 points and host Azam FC, who have nine. Maniema Union are also on nine points and remain in contention depending on results.

Elsewhere, Group A’s qualifiers are already confirmed, though first place is still to be settled between USM Alger and Olympic Safi.

In Group C, CR Belouizdad and AS Otoho have progressed, while Group D remains finely balanced with Kaizer Chiefs, Zamalek and Al Masry all in the mix.
