Nyayo National Stadium will be the center of attention this Saturday as Nairobi United FC welcome Uganda’s NEC FC for the decisive second leg of their CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round tie.
Kick-off is set for 4:00 pm.
The first leg in Kampala ended in a pulsating 2-2 draw, leaving the contest finely balanced.
Nairobi United, who are making their continental debut after a remarkable FKF Cup triumph earlier this year, will count on home support to push them through to the next round.
In Uganda, Nairobi United showed resilience to come away with a dramatic draw. Enock Machaka fired the visitors ahead in the 25th minute after a neat build-up through the middle, silencing the home crowd.
NEC, however, fought back late, leveling in the 80th minute through Cromwell Rwothomio’s powerful header before Paul Mucureezi converted a penalty in the 89th minute to swing momentum their way.
Just as the hosts thought they had sealed victory, Nairobi United struck back deep into stoppage time. Substitute Shami Kibwana pounced on a loose ball and smashed home to make it 2-2, sparking wild celebrations from the travelling Kenyan fans.
Led by coach Nicholas Muyoti, Nairobi United are riding high after a breakthrough domestic campaign where they shocked established giants Tusker, Kakamega Homeboyz, and Gor Mahia to lift the FKF Cup.
That triumph handed them a ticket to continental football, and they now aim to extend their fairy-tale by advancing to the second preliminary round.
Both Nairobi United and NEC are debutants in the CAF Confederation Cup, with NEC only established in 2018.
The winner of this tie will face either Sudan’s Al Ahli Madani or Tunisia’s ES Sportive in the next round.
