NEDP condemns alleged disruption of food drive in Embu, calls for swift police probe

The National Economic Development Party (NEDP) has strongly condemned what it described as a violent disruption of a humanitarian food distribution exercise in Evurore Ward, Embu County.

In a statement signed by Secretary General Ben Mulwa, the party said the incident occurred on Monday, February 23 when members of the Sonko Rescue Team were conducting a food donation event targeting elderly and vulnerable residents of the Ngunyumu community.

According to the party, the event was proceeding peacefully when former National Assembly Speaker and Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi allegedly arrived at the venue accompanied by several supporters. The NEDP claimed that tensions flared after Muturi demanded to address the gathering, asserting political dominance in the area.

The party further alleged that a confrontation ensued, during which food supplies including rice, maize flour, wheat flour and cooking oil were destroyed and some elderly beneficiaries were roughed up in the chaos.

The matter was reported at Kanyuambora Police Post under OB No. 09/23/02/2026, the party said, calling on law enforcement agencies to expedite investigations into the incident.

NEDP described the disruption as “unfortunate and barbaric,” maintaining that Kenya’s democratic framework guarantees citizens the right to assemble and conduct lawful activities without intimidation.

The party urged young people not to allow themselves to be drawn into political confrontations and appealed for tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

“We all have a duty to protect the rights and freedoms we enjoy today,” the statement read, adding that those found culpable should be held accountable in accordance with the law.
