Abdi Afi Mohamud was looking after his goats in his farm along Tana River when the beast laid an ambush. The scuffle that ensued led to the sexagenarian losing his left eye.

Speaking to journalists from the hospital, the victim's relative Abdikafar Yusuf said the hyena strayed into the goats’ farm within the village and started attacking the herd.

Yusuf said the commotion and cries from the goats attracted the attention of the old man who rushed to the scene but the hyena instead turned to him.

His cries attracted the rest of the villagers who came to his rescue and killed the hyena.

The villagers then rushed the victim to the hospital for treatment for the injuries he incurred after the encounter.
