8-year-old girl who conceived after defilement ordeal safely gives birth

An eight-year-old girl has given birth in Bindura - a town in the province of Mashonaland, Zimbabwe.

The girl, who fell pregnant after she was defiled last year, gave birth through a Caesarean Section at Bindura Provincial Hospital last Thursday (January 19).

Confirming the birth, the hospital's superintendent Dr. Budirirai Gwagwa told ZBC News that the mother and the child are in stable condition.

"The patient was taken to theatre and around 0900hrs a Caesarean Section was performed, and she delivered a baby girl. Currently, she is stable and receiving post-op care and the baby is stable receiving neo-natal care," Dr. Budiriria said.

The girl is now under the custody of the social welfare department.
